Many teachers working in England have been trained as teachers overseas. An OTT can work as a 'temporary teacher' for up to four years without being awarded qualified teacher status (QTS). However, suitably qualified OTTs have the option to present themselves for QTS assessment without further training. And in some cases people with at least two years' full-time teaching experience may be exempted from the requirement to serve an induction period after qualification.

Teachers who qualify outside of the European economic area (EEA) have to be assessed against the Standards for the award of QTS in England before they can be awarded QTS. Teachers trained in EEA member states are not automatically recognised for QTS; they are required to check their eligibility with the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE).
